Fuerte Garden Week 2
OK. I have gotten the dirt screening area pretty much cleaned up. It could still use a little more tiddying up but it's good to use for right now.

Fuerte Garden Week 1
I got all of the grass and weeds out of the garden this past week. It took awhile because I pulled them all out by hand. This was to try to get as much of the roots out as possible since I'll be reusing the soil I take out of here. This area has been watered with the sprinkler on the same schedule as the lawn so at least the soil wasn't as hard as a rock.
With that done it's still not time to start digging out the soil. I haven't used the area where the soil will be screened for 6 or 8 months so the dichondra has taken over much of that area. This will have to be weeded by hand also or else as I'm moving the dirt around here I would just be adding that dichondra to my screened soil.
Once this area is cleared out I'll be ready to start digging.

Fuerte Garden
So this is the mess that will become home to a semi dwarf Fuerte Avocado.
This poor plant was brought to me about a year ago and really is begging to be put into the ground. My problem is that I really like to prepare the garden before I get the plant. I can't change the soil the way I like after the tree is in the ground.
Don't think that this poor tree is going in the ground anytime soon, but I working on it. It will take me six or eight weeks to redo this bed. I'm leaning towards eight weeks.
I made the garden big. At it's longest point it is ten feet across. It's a larger area than this tree will need, but it will take the Fuerte a few years to mature, so during that time and even after that it will have to share the space with vegetables. I don't like wasted space so everyone has to learn to live together.
This little project is a lot of work. All of the soil will be dug out down to three feet. That's a lot of dirt. After that the soil will be screened to remove rocks, roots and whatever. After that it will be mixed with compost and manure. It then will be bagged up until the hole is finished.
I'm going to try to post weekly updates on this project so you can see just how slowly I move!
The end result will be great.
