Cut Worms
Normally I don't have much of a problem with cut worms. Springtime of each year I will lose 1 or 2 transplants which isn't bad.
This year has been a whole different story. I lost 6 transplants to cutworms so far. Since I try to start everything from seed it's harder because I don't always have a replacement for the lost transplant and don't really want to run to the nursery and buy something there.
The cut worms mowed down 2 of my 'Early Long Purple' eggplant. I had too many and still do so that wasn't a great problem. Lost 2 'Michihli' cabbage, which I really like, so I only have 2 of those left now. Lost 1 'Jubilee' tomato. I have 2 left so I'll live. However the two that are left have been in the ground for awhile . They look fine but they just won't grow. The last transplant to go was an 'Early Jalapeno' which now leaves me with only 1 and I wish I had more.
The cut worm problem seems to be over for this year as they haven't touched any new trans plants that I have put in the ground. I've read different suggestions about combating the worms and the only one that seems practical for me is to put a collar of aluminum foil around the stem.
